History of Grama Panchayat

Located in Ponnani Taluk at the southwestern border of Malappuram district, Perumpadappu Grama Panchayat is an ancient region holding a significant position in Kerala's history. As the heartland of the historic 'Vanneri Nadu', this village played a decisive role in the political and cultural evolution of medieval Kerala.

Perumpadappu is historically famous as the birthplace of the Cochin Kingdom, whose rulers were officially known as 'Perumpadappu Mooppil' or 'Perumpadappu Swaroopam'. Following the fall of the Chera Dynasty in Mahodayapuram (Kodungallur), the ruling lineage that emerged around Perumpadappu Mana later governed from Cochin, with the Kovilakam (palace) and Mana in Vanneri serving as their initial headquarters.

In medieval Kerala, the surrounding region was known as Vanneri Nadu, an economically and militarily strategic area over which the Zamorin of Calicut and Perumpadappu Swaroopam fought continuous wars. Due to intensifying attacks by the Zamorin during the 15th century, the royal line shifted its capital southwards to Thiruvanchikulam and later to Cochin; however, major rituals such as the Ariyattuvaazhcha (coronation) continued in Vanneri, reflecting their deep connection to this land.

Blending the cultural traditions of North Malabar and Central Kerala, Perumpadappu features ancient temples, sacred groves (kavukal), and mosques that stand as enduring testaments to religious harmony. Remnants of historical administrative and cultural centers persist around landmarks like the Vanneri School, while agricultural abundance and plentiful water sources have long enriched local life.

The modern Grama Panchayat was established following the unification of Kerala and the implementation of local self-governance laws. Today, while upholding its rich heritage, Perumpadappu has made significant strides in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, maintaining a prominent position on the cultural map of Malabar.
