Situated in Ponnani Taluk at the southwestern border of Malappuram district, Perumpadappu Grama Panchayat is an ancient region holding a significant position in Kerala's history. As the heartland of the historic 'Vanneri Nadu', this village played a decisive role in the political and cultural evolution of medieval Kerala.

Perumpadappu is renowned in history as the birthplace of the Cochin Kingdom. The rulers of Cochin were officially known as 'Perumpadappu Mooppil' or 'Perumpadappu Swaroopam'. Following the fall of the Chera Dynasty in Mahodayapuram (Kodungallur), the ruling lineage that emerged centered around Perumpadappu Mana later established its governance in Cochin. The Kovilakam (palace) and Mana situated in Vanneri, Perumpadappu, served as the initial headquarters of this royal dynasty.

In medieval Kerala, the region encompassing Perumpadappu and its surroundings was known as 'Vanneri Nadu'. Continuous warfare occurred between the Zamorin of Calicut and Perumpadappu Swaroopam to establish dominance over this economically and militarily strategic area.

Due to intensifying attacks by the Zamorin during the 15th century, the Perumpadappu royal line was forced to shift its capital southwards to Thiruvanchikulam and subsequently to Cochin. Despite shifting the capital, major rituals and ceremonies—including the Ariyattuvaazhcha (coronation) of the Cochin kings—continued to be conducted in Vanneri, demonstrating their deep connection to this land.

Perumpadappu brings together the cultural features of both North Malabar and Central Kerala. Ancient temples, sacred groves (kavukal), and mosques stand as testament to the region's rich interfaith harmony. Remnants of historic administrative and cultural centers still survive around places like the Vanneri School. Agricultural prosperity and abundant water bodies, including ponds and streams, have long enriched the social life of this village.

The present-day Perumpadappu Grama Panchayat took shape following the formation of unified Kerala and the implementation of local self-governance laws. While preserving its rich history, the panchayat has made notable progress in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Combining the historical legacy of Vanneri and the heritage of Perumpadappu Swaroopam, the village maintains a distinguished place on the cultural map of Malabar.
